# Nexcess Managed Magento Backup and Restore

A comprehensive backup strategy is critical for protecting your Magento **store**. Given the complexity of the platform, a backup is more than just a copy of files; it’s a complete snapshot of your **e-shop**, including the database with all customer and order data, the file system containing your extensions and themes, and the media library with images for your physical and **digital products**.

Backup management for a Nexcess Managed Magento plan involves two layers:

1. **Managed Server Backups:** As part of our managed service, Nexcess performs regular, server-level backups for disaster recovery purposes. These are your safety net against hardware failure or other catastrophic events.
2. **User-Managed Application Backups:** For day-to-day operations, it is a best practice for you to create your own backups before performing major updates, installing new extensions, or making significant changes to your **store**. This gives you direct control and the ability to perform a quick restore.
